São Jorge Castle has some of Lisbon’s best proposal views, but because it is one of the city’s busiest attractions, choosing the right time and exact spot makes a huge difference.
This is the place where you'll enjoy 360-degree panoramas over the city, with historic surroundings, friendly peacocks, and several memorable spots for asking the big question.
As a Lisbon proposal photographer based near Alfama, I regularly photograph surprise proposals inside the complex and have learned which areas become quieter in the evening, where I can wait unnoticed and which spots give us enough room for photographs.
I'd love to tell you more about the quieter spots for a Lisbon Castle proposal, tickets, the best time of day and how we can work together if you're looking to capture this special moment.
São Jorge Castle proposal at a glance
- Best time: After 7 PM in summer
- Crowds: Quieter in the evening, but never fully private
- Best for: Lisbon views, stone walls and varied photos
- Keep in mind: It can be windy and the ground is uneven
- Entrance fee: Tickets required
Is a castle proposal in Lisbon right for you?
Castelo de São Jorge is a major landmark, and it's a popular place to visit. But before you think it might be too busy for a surprise proposal, think again. As an Alfama-based photographer, it's actually one of my favourite locations for a sunset proposal in Lisbon!
Here are some reasons why:
- Some of the most beautiful views over Lisbon
- Ancient walls and stone archways
- Several possible proposal spots in one location
- A mix of unique architectural backgrounds
- Easy access to Alfama for photographs afterwards
- A location that feels distinctly Lisbon
- The occasional appearance from one of the many peacocks
Best time to avoid crowds
In summer, the best time to propose at Castelo de São Jorge is usually after 7 PM.
Most day visitors have started leaving by then, while many other travellers are heading to dinner. The castle is normally much calmer than it is during the afternoon, but there is still enough daylight for the surprise proposal in Lisbon and a portrait session afterwards.
From March to October, the landmark is open until 9 PM. However, some towers and wall walks may close earlier, depending on the available daylight.
Early morning can also work, although it does not open until 9 AM. There are often already visitors waiting at the entrance, and the light becomes bright and harsh quite quickly on clear days.
From November to February, it's usually quieter throughout the day, but it closes earlier. Winter can be a good choice if privacy matters more to you than having a late golden-hour proposal.
I recommend avoiding weekend afternoons whenever possible. Even outside peak summer, this is when the main viewpoints and wall walks are most likely to feel busy. If you’re booking proposal photography in Lisbon, the quality and direction of the light should also be part of your planning.
The best Lisbon Castle proposal spots
Some areas inside the complex are much better suited to surprise proposals than others. The best location for you will depend on how much privacy you want, the type of scene you prefer, and how comfortable you feel proposing around other visitors.
The wall near the entrance
My favourite proposal spot is on top of the wall near the entrance.
From this vantage point, I can see you arriving, and I can position myself here before you arrive. It is also easy for you to recognise me without making it obvious that a photographer is waiting.
This section of the wall is often quieter than the main square. It is also shaded during part of the day, which gives us softer and more even light than the exposed areas of the castle.
The wall has enough space for me to change position while photographing the proposal, which is important for capturing both your reactions without interrupting the moment.
The ruins and stone archways
Just below the wall, you will find a quieter area with stone ruins, arches and old doorways.
This is a good option if you would prefer a more intimate proposal without the busiest city viewpoint behind you. The stone surroundings still make it clear that you are inside a historic castle, while the smaller spaces often feel calmer.
The ruins also give us several nearby backup locations. If one archway is occupied, we can usually move to another area without changing the overall plan.
The main viewpoint
The main square near the entrance has some of the best city and the Tagus River views.
It is a beautiful place for photographs, but it is also one of the busiest parts of the castle. Even in the evening, you should expect other visitors to be nearby.
For that reason, I do not usually recommend it as the first choice for a private surprise proposal. However, we will almost certainly stop here for photographs afterwards.
How the surprise works
Planning a proposal at São Jorge Castle can feel complicated when you are arranging everything from another country.
Once you book your proposal photography session, I will help you with the location, timing and arrival so you know exactly what to do on the day.
First, we will choose the proposal spot. I will explain the advantages and disadvantages of each location based on the views, available light, expected crowds and the level of privacy you would like.
I will then send you clear directions and reference photographs of the exact area. You will know where to walk, where to stop and how to recognise me without making your partner suspicious.
We will also choose at least one backup location nearby. The castle is a public attraction, so no photographer can guarantee that a particular corner will remain empty. Having a second option allows us to adjust without creating unnecessary stress.
On the day, I will arrive early to check the area and see how busy it is. We can share our live locations through WhatsApp so I can follow your arrival without needing to send obvious messages.
My goal is to make the process feel simple for you while keeping the surprise completely natural for your partner.
What happens on the day
Before your session, you will already have received directions, photographs and instructions for the agreed proposal spot.
On the day, it usually works like this:
- I arrive early and check the proposal location.
- You enter with your partner.
- You follow the directions I sent in advance.
- We use live locations through WhatsApp to confirm that you are approaching.
- You stop at the agreed place and propose.
- I photograph the moment discreetly from a distance.
- Once your partner has had time to react, I introduce myself.
- We continue with your engagement portraits around the castle.
If the first location is unexpectedly crowded, I will move to the backup spot and guide you with what we agreed in advance.
After the proposal, there is no need to start posing immediately. You will have time to celebrate, look at the ring and enjoy the moment before we begin the rest of the session.
Lisbon Castle Proposal photography packages
Choose your photography package based on how much time you would like for portraits after the proposal and whether you want to include another part of town.
30-Minute Proposal Session
A 30-minute session is best for couples who want the surprise proposal photographed along with a small number of portraits nearby.
This option includes:
- The surprise proposal
- Your first reactions after the proposal
- A short portrait session close to the proposal spot
- One or two nearby castle backgrounds
- 20 images of your choice in a private gallery
Because time is limited, we will stay within one area of Castelo de São Jorge rather than walking around the entire site.
This package works best when you want the moment captured discreetly but do not need a full engagement session afterwards. Check availability for your mini session!
60-Minute Proposal Session
A 60-minute session gives us enough time to photograph the proposal and explore several parts of the complex without rushing.
This option usually includes:
- The surprise proposal
- Photographs around the castle
- The main viewpoints
- Stone walls and archways
- A mixture of natural and gently guided portraits
- 40 images of your choice in a private gallery
This package is ideal for couples who want a varied gallery while keeping the entire session focused on Castelo de São Jorge. Book the 60-minute session online.
90-Minute Proposal Session
A 90-minute session gives us more time to explore the complex and continue to a second location.
After photographing inside, we can walk into Alfama or visit a nearby viewpoint. This gives you a more varied gallery with castle walls, tiled streets, viewpoints and quieter corners.
I recommend this option if you would like to include locations such as Portas do Sol, Santa Luzia or the surrounding streets of Alfama.
This option usually includes:
- The surprise proposal and your first reactions
- Portraits at several scenic spots within the castle grounds
- Photographs along the historic walls, stone archways and quieter corners
- Panoramic Lisbon and Tagus River backdrops
- A walk through Alfama or a nearby viewpoint after leaving the castle
- A mix of candid moments and gently guided portraits
- 40 images of your choice in a private gallery
Every proposal package includes help choosing the location, organising the times, preparing your arrival instructions and arranging a backup proposal spot. See if the 90-minute session is available.

Tickets and practical details
Entrance to São Jorge Castle currently costs €17, plus an online administration fee, bringing the total to €18.25 per person. Tickets are valid for 90 days after purchase, and you do not need to choose a specific date or time slot.
You can buy your own tickets online or at the entrance. My entrance ticket is not included in the photography package and will also have to be paid for in advance.
If you prefer, I can buy all the tickets in advance, and you can reimburse me before the session.
What to wear
Lisbon’s streets can be challenging, and the castle is no different. Many people want to dress nicely for the occasion, but I highly recommend wearing comfortable shoes and avoiding heels. Most paths inside the landmark are covered in gravel, and the steps and walls are uneven.
You are still very welcome to dress up for the occasion! Many of my clients wear smart-casual clothes, and because they often book me for a sunset shoot, it is usually a good excuse to dress nicely before dinner. Your other half won’t suspect a thing, while you still look the part!
Can you bring flowers or champagne?
Flowers and champagne are a lovely way to celebrate your engagement, but I do not arrange decorations or proposal setups inside Castelo de São Jorge. Carrying a bouquet would also make it much harder for me to stay unnoticed before the proposal.
I can bring a chilled bottle of sparkling wine or champagne, but we will wait until we have left the grounds before opening it. We can then celebrate and take a few more photos outside the castle.
Combining the castle with Alfama
Yes! Castelo de São Jorge is located on the hill in Alfama, and it's close to some of the best viewpoints in Lisbon. It can easily be combined with another location during a longer proposal session.
After the proposal and some portraits inside the complex, we can leave and continue through the streets of Alfama. This gives you a mix of castle walls, breathtaking views, tiled buildings and quieter streets in the same gallery. We could also walk towards viewpoints such as Portas do Sol or Santa Luzia, depending on the crowds, available light and how much time we have.
A 60-minute package gives us enough time for the proposal and photos around the castle. For a second location. I recommend booking at least 90 minutes. Keep in mind that Alfama has steep streets, stairs and uneven pavements, so comfortable shoes are still important.
Not sure which location suits you best? Choose Castelo de São Jorge for views and ancient walls, Alfama for colourful streets, or the Botanical Garden for a quieter setting surrounded by greenery.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the entrance fee included in the photography package?
No. Entrance tickets for you, your partner and your photographer are not included in the photography package. You can buy your own tickets online or at the entrance, but you will also need to reimburse me for my ticket before the session. I can also help you purchase all tickets if needed.
What is the best time of day to propose at São Jorge Castle?
In summer, I recommend proposing after 7 PM. Many daytime visitors have left by then, but there is still enough time for the proposal and photos afterwards. The complex is open until 9 PM from March to October, although the towers and wall walks may close earlier depending on daylight. Early morning is another option, although there are usually already visitors waiting when it opens at 9 AM, and it gets too bright for soft, golden pictures quickly. During winter, it's generally quieter throughout the day, but it closes at 6 PM.
Is the castle accessible for people with limited mobility?
Parts of Castelo de São Jorge are accessible, including an adapted route with a more even surface. The ticket office has a wheelchair ramp and priority service. However, the castle walls, towers, stairs and some uneven areas will not be suitable for everyone.
Can family or friends join the proposal?
Yes. Family and friends are more than welcome to join the surprise or meet you afterwards. Please contact me before booking if your group has more than six people. Larger groups need a little more planning, especially when choosing the location and arranging group photos inside the castle. Friends and family should also receive clear instructions so they do not accidentally give away the surprise or block the photographer’s view.
Ready to propose at Lisbon Castle?
There are lots of stunning proposal locations in Portugal, but how memorable would it be to get down on one knee inside a castle?
Castelo de São Jorge is a great choice if you want views, historic surroundings and plenty of variety for photos afterwards. It is not the most private proposal location, but with the right timing and a backup spot, we can usually find a quieter place for the moment itself.
I will help you choose the location, plan the timing and make sure you know exactly where to go on the day. After the proposal, we can continue with photos around the complex or combine it with Alfama and one of the nearby viewpoints.
If this sounds like the right setting for your proposal, you can view the packages and check availability online. I would love to be your surprise proposal photographer in Lisbon!
