Are you thinking of proposing or planning a photoshoot when visiting Lisbon? The Lisbon Botanical Garden with its numerous backgrounds might be the perfect location. In this guide, I’ll explain what to expect, the best places for photos and the best time to plan a proposal or photoshoot in the garden.

You can visit the garden and propose to your partner without hiring a photographer, as long as you follow the usual visitor rules. However, if you are planning a professional photoshoot, whether it is a proposal, couple or family session, your photographer will need to arrange permission in advance.

As a Lisbon photographer, I have written this guide mainly from a photography point of view. I’ll show you some of my favourite scenes, share examples from real proposals, share local tips, and explain why the Botanical Garden is one of my favourite photoshoot locations in Lisbon.

Lisbon Botanical Garden photoshoot at a glance

  • Best time: Morning or late afternoon
  • Crowds: Usually quieter than central Lisbon streets
  • Best for: Green surroundings, shade and a calmer session
  • Keep in mind: Professional photography requires permission
  • Entrance fee: Tickets required

Why choose the Lisbon Botanical Garden for your photoshoot?

The Lisbon Botanical Garden, also known as Jardim Botânico de Lisboa, is a stunning place year round. You'll discover many unique plants, trees, and in certain seasons flowers like the bougainvillea. But besides the green oasis, there are also some stunning places to take photos in, which I’ll show you in more detail later. There are some buildings and even a former observatory that make your pictures even more beautiful!

The botanical garden is also one of the best places to propose in Lisbon if you prefer intimacy to famous landmarks. There is a small entrance fee of €5.00, so it is usually less busy than public parks and the streets of central Lisbon. So, if you feel uncomfortable being photographed among the crowds and prefer a private moment, it's one of the best proposal spots in Lisbon.

The trees provide plenty of shade throughout the day, which is helpful for photos and makes the garden more comfortable during warmer months. It is also close to Príncipe Real, so you can easily combine your proposal or photoshoot with drinks or dinner afterwards.

A quiet location, but not a private one

Just a note, the gardens are still a popular location in Lisbon. I have photographed many proposals without any people around, but people may walk past, and I cannot guarantee an empty setting throughout the whole session.

If you want to avoid crowds as much as possible, I would suggest planning a photoshoot as soon as the gardens open, or any time after 5 PM in summer.

Who is a Botanical Garden photoshoot best for?

  • Couples or families who prefer natural settings
  • Couples or families who dislike posing in busy streets
  • Intimate proposals with next to no people around
  • Proposals without decorations
  • People visiting during Lisbon’s hotter months who appreciate some shade

When I would recommend another location

The garden may not be the best option for people who want:

  • Lisbon architecture, landmarks or tiles in your pictures
  • River views or sunset views over the city
  • Extensive decorations or a styled proposal setup

Depending on the season, the garden may or may not have any flowers. If having flowers in the pictures is a top priority, there are other stunning locations in Lisbon to choose from.

Other parks and gardens in Lisbon

The Botanical Garden in Lisbon (Jardim Botânico de Lisboa) is not the only botanical garden in Lisbon. You also have the Tropical Botanical Garden in Belém (Jardim Botânico Tropical), the Botanical Garden in Ajuda (Jardim Botânico da Ajuda), and Estufa Fria in Parque Eduardo VII. All the botanical gardens have an entrance fee and need prior approval for photographing.

There are also public parks in Lisbon which are a lovely place for a romantic proposal. Examples are the Garden of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Parque Florestal de MonsantoPark Necessidades and Jardim da Estrela. All amazing spots for those connected to nature!

The best photoshoot locations inside the garden

There is a lot to see inside the gardens, and they offer a timeless backdrop for your pictures. You can move between several different areas without spending much time walking. Here are some of my favourite areas.

The palm-tree lane

I kind of came up with this name, as I don't think it's official, but it really is that: a lane filled with palm trees! It's very close to the entrance and a stunning spot for photography. This is the least shaded area though, so on bright sunny days it might be best to save this area for later.

Good for:

  • The main proposal moment
  • Wide environmental photographs
  • Walking photographs after the proposal
  • Creating depth without needing architecture

The cactus garden

The cactus garden is also near the entrance and this is one of my favourite spots! The light always appears to be right, and the colours just burst in this area! If you're planning a proposal in Lisbon in the gardens, you will 100% be photographed here!

The lake

This is the area where most of my couples pop the question! It's shaded, secluded and super romantic! There is a small bridge that just creates the perfect scene and I can capture the moment from afar. Even if we capture the big moment elsewhere, the lake and bridge usually feature in my photoshoots.

Good for:

  • The main proposal moment
  • Shade
  • A romantic setting with the lake

The bamboo tunnel

This is another self-made name, but it fits the spot well. There are several areas with bamboo in the garden. In one section, the plants create a tunnel-like path, while elsewhere the tall bamboo stalks reach high above you. The light is a bit challenging at times, but it's a lovely area to stop and take some pictures.

Tropical plants, trees and paths

The park in itself already creates the perfect setting. There are some unique species, tall trees, huge leaves and paths where we can take pictures. There are also a few steps, but these sections can easily be avoided if you have limited mobility.

The observatory and other buildings

Most people leave after having seen the main garden, but there is more, and it's a hidden gem! Once you exit the park, you make a right turn instead of exiting the area, and you'll discover a former observatory. The pink building certainly stands out and the calçada Portugesa (the famous Portuguese floor tiles) complete the scene.

You'll also reach the back of the National Museum of Science & Natural History. The tall windows and doors are beautiful and offer plenty of shade to take good images in.

Is the Lisbon Botanical Garden a good place to propose?

One of the first question I ask my proposal clients is: do you mind crowds? And most answer, we would prefer an intimate setting. If that sounds like you, this is one of the best places in Lisbon for a proposal. As you can see from the pictures, there is a lot of variety with backgrounds, and you'll be mostly all my yourself.

I'll help you pick the exact spot, and I always arrive a little earlier so I can scout the actual situation in real time. I also always share my live location on WhatsApp so you'll know exactly where I'll wait, and I can see how near you are.

After the proposal, I'll give you a minute to enjoy the "yes", and afterwards I'll guide you during the engagement session around the garden.

How to plan a surprise proposal in the garden

Before you imagine me jumping out of the bushes to capture your proposal, in this case that is sometimes exactly what happens! But first, I’ll help you plan everything so we are all in the right place at the right time.

  1. We choose the proposal spot: We’ll look at your favourite parts of the garden and decide which location works best for your proposal, the light and your partner’s mobility.
  2. I send you clear directions: You’ll receive directions to the meeting point, along with instructions on where to walk and exactly where to stop.
  3. We agree on the timing: I’ll arrive before you and get into position. I usually recommend leaving some extra time in case entering the garden or walking to the proposal spot takes longer than expected.
  4. You share your live location: On the day, you can share your live location with me through WhatsApp. This helps me follow your progress without messaging you and risking your partner seeing anything.
  5. I wait nearby: Depending on the chosen spot, I may wait behind some plants, further along the path or in another discreet location. I’ll start taking photos as you approach and capture the proposal itself.
  6. We take more photos afterwards: Once your partner has said yes (yeaaaaaah!), I’ll introduce myself, and we’ll continue with a short couple photoshoot around the garden.

I’ll also arrange the current photography permission before your session, so you do not need to handle this yourself.

What is the best time for a Botanical Garden photoshoot?

The most quiet time in the gardens is when it opens and before closing. So depending on the season, it's best to aim for a 9 or 10 AM start, or meet later in the day. In summer, any time after 5 PM works well regarding light and crowds.

The official opening times are currently:

  • 1 April to 30 September: 9:00 to 20:00
  • 1 October to 31 March: 10:00 to 17:00
  • Last admission is 30 minutes before closing

Which session length is right for you?

I’ve focused a lot on proposals in this guide, but the Botanical Garden also works well for couples and families. You can book a session here simply to capture your time in Lisbon, celebrate a special occasion, or enjoy a quieter photoshoot away from the busiest parts of the city.

30-minute session (20 images)

A 30-minute mini session is perfect if you:

  • Want a quick capture of proposal itself and some portraits nearby
  • Are travelling with very young children who may not enjoy posing for long
  • Are booking a maternity session but tire easily or do not feel well enough for a longer shoot

60-minute session (40 images)

A 60-minute session gives us enough time to explore most of the garden without rushing. We can use several of the main photo spots, giving you a varied gallery with romantic locations.

90-minute session (60 images)

The longer session is perfect if you want a slower experience, and more variety or photographs outside the garden as well. Some areas we could visit after the garden are:

  • Príncipe Real and the viewpoint Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara
  • The cobblestone streets around Bairro Alto
  • A nearby café for a coffee with pastel de nata, or I can bring a celebratory drink for after your proposal

What to wear for your Botanical Garden photoshoot

  • Choose colours that stand out from dark green backgrounds
  • Cream, white, soft blue, rust, pink and muted warm colours generally photograph well
  • Avoid wearing matching green outfits
  • Wear shoes suitable for gravel, slopes and uneven garden paths
  • Bring a second pair of shoes when planning to wear heels
  • Consider mosquito repellent during warmer periods

Photography permissions, admission and garden rules

The Lisbon Botanical Garden is a protected scientific garden and National Monument rather than an unrestricted public park. For that reason, professional photography is subject to the garden’s rules and requires prior authorisation. I cannot bring equipment such as tripods and monopods.

There is no additional fee to photograph inside the gardens, and I can contact them upfront to arrange the necessary approval.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you need permission for a professional photoshoot in the Lisbon Botanical Garden?

Yes, professional photography is subject to the garden’s current rules and prior approval is required. I can help with the administrative side of things. Drones are not allowed.

Is the Lisbon Botanical Garden a private proposal location?

No. It is a public garden that remains open to other visitors. But overall, it's much quieter and more sheltered than Lisbon’s busy streets. Complete privacy cannot be guaranteed.

What is the best time for a photoshoot in the Botanical Garden?

The best time depends on the season, opening hours and the type of light we want. Early sessions are usually preferable when fewer visitors are the main priority. In summer, later sessions are possible because the garden stays open until 20:00. Any time after 5 PM works well.

How long should I book for a proposal?

A 30-minute session covers the proposal and a few portraits nearby. A 60-minute session gives us more time to photograph the reaction and explore several garden locations afterwards. During a 90-minute session, we can even take images at the nearby viewpoint Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara or the cobbled streets of Bairro Alto.

Will the garden be green throughout the year?

Yes, the garden has some incredible tree and plant variations that remain green throughout the year. In summer, it can be drier, whereas in spring and autumn you can expect some blooming flowers.

Are entrance tickets included in the photoshoot price?

No. You can buy your entrance tickets at the garden on the day, and there is normally no need to book in advance. Clients also cover my entrance ticket, which can be paid in advance online or PayPal, or in cash in euros on the day.

Can we bring flowers, champagne or proposal decorations?

No. Decorations, bouquets and drinks are not permitted as part of a proposal setup inside the garden. I can arrange flowers, champagne and other proposal extras at certain Lisbon locations, but they would need to be used outside the Botanical Garden.

Can we take photographs elsewhere in Lisbon after the garden?

Yes. Longer sessions can include the area of Príncipe Real, Bairro Alto or another central Lisbon location, depending on the package, timing and transport required.

Are dogs allowed in the Lisbon Botanical Garden?

Pets are not allowed inside the garden. Only assistance dogs are permitted, and you will need to show proof that the dog is a registered assistance dog at the entrance. The dog shown in some of the photos in this guide is an assistance dog.

Could this be your Lisbon photoshoot location?

The botanical gardens are certainly one of my favourite locations in Lisbon. It's less crowded than the viewpoints and landmarks in the city, and the park has a ton of photographic settings. If you like nature, I can highly recommend it.

I photograph all over Lisbon, though, and if you're looking for panoramic views that overlook the Tagus River, or you prefer a city or beach scenery in Cascais, there are many other beautiful places to choose from. Please have a look at my other location guides such as Alfama, Castelo de São Jorge and the viewpoints during sunrise, or get in touch to find your perfect spot!
