If you’re planning to propose in Cascais, timing matters more than you think.
I’ve had clients message me after scouting the “perfect” Cascais beach proposal spot, only to show up at sunset and find 30+ people already there. Not just tourists, but other proposals, photographers, and even small crowds watching.
Cascais is one of the most beautiful places to propose in Portugal, but honestly, this is where most proposals go wrong. A little bit of local knowledge makes a huge difference.
I’m a proposal photographer in Cascais, and most of the work actually happens before the proposal even starts. Choosing the right location, avoiding peak times, and sometimes having a backup plan ready just in case.
This is exactly what I’ll help you figure out. I’ll walk you through where to propose in Cascais, when to go (sunrise vs sunset makes a bigger difference than people expect), and how to keep the moment feeling private and natural. I’ll also share a few good locations nearby to celebrate afterwards.
6 Best places for an unforgettable Cascais proposal
There is no shortage of beautiful Cascais proposal locations, but the right choice depends on more than the view. Privacy, crowds, accessibility, lighting and the time of day can all affect how the moment feels—and how it photographs.
When couples first contact me, I often notice a gap between their expectations and the reality of proposing in Cascais. They picture a quiet, intimate setting, but many of the most popular spots can be much busier than expected, especially during summer and around sunset.
Below is a quick comparison of my favourite places to propose in Cascais. I explain each location in more detail further down, including the best time to visit, what the crowd levels are usually like and who I think each setting suits best.
| Location | Best time | Crowd level | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Santa Marta Lighthouse and Casa de Santa Maria | Sunrise or early morning | Busy later in the morning, especially in summer | Iconic Cascais views, the lighthouse and the ocean |
| Museu Condes de Castro Guimarães | Early morning or later in the evening | Busier during the day | Fairytale architecture, the small beach and varied backgrounds |
| Parque Marechal Carmona | Morning or late afternoon | Usually moderate | Greenery, shade, tiled details and easier access |
| Cascais town centre and beaches | Before 9 AM | Very busy during the day in summer | Colourful streets, beaches and a lively Cascais atmosphere |
| Boca do Inferno | Sunrise | Busy during the day and around sunset | Dramatic cliffs and wild coastal scenery |
| Praia do Guincho and Praia da Cresmina | Morning or sunset on a calm day | Varies with the weather and season | Open beaches, dunes and natural sunset photographs |
You do not necessarily need to choose only one location for the entire photoshoot. The most important decision is where you would like to ask the question. After the proposal, we can move to other nearby areas and create a wider variety of photographs.
During a 90-minute proposal session, we can usually combine the main locations around central Cascais, including Santa Marta, the museum area, the park, the town centre and Boca do Inferno. Guincho is farther away, so it normally needs to be planned as a separate option rather than added to the same route.
Once you have chosen your favourite setting for the proposal itself, I can help plan the timing, the exact meeting point and the best route for the rest of the session.
1. Santa Marta Lighthouse and Casa de Santa Maria
The Santa Marta Lighthouse is one of my favourite locations for a surprise proposal in Cascais. The view is simply stunning over the ocean, and the lighthouse and Casa de Santa Maria makes it picture perfect!
It's just off the main road and a short walk down to the rocks. During the day, people will sunbathe and swim here, but if you're an early riser, you can have this magical spot all to yourself!
Choose Santa Marta if: you want an iconic Cascais backdrop and can manage an early start.

Where: Google Maps location | Easy to reach: yes, there are stone steps towards the viewpoint, but rocks near the water. Mind the uneven stones! Crowded: It can be very busy after 9 AM in summer, and people swim here also | Tip: plan a sunrise proposal in Cascais to avoid crowds!

2. Museu Condes de Castro Guimarães
Museu Condes de Castro Guimarães is another stunning backdrop, and it's just across the road from the lighthouse. Inside there is a museum, but the revivalist-style palace seems to come straight from a fairytale.
In front of the museum is a small beach which leads towards a beautiful stone bridge. With low tide, you can walk pretty far, and you can see the lighthouse on the other side again. When I do photoshoots in Cascais, I normally visit both places to take pictures.
Choose the museum beach if: you want variety within a short walk.

Where: Google Maps location | Easy to reach: Yes, there are stone steps towards the beach. Crowded: During the day, people will sunbathe and swim here. Later in the day it's less busy again as there is a lot of shade. | Tip: The early morning is best for a private moment on the beach, but the evening in summer is wonderful too.

3. Parque Marechal Carmona
The Marechal Carmona park is right behind the Condes de Castro Guimarães museum, and it's a bit of a hidden gem in Cascais. It’s popular with local families, but it’s also a beautiful place for a proposal.
As it's pretty big, there is always a quiet location to pop the question, and the many sights inside the park are ideal for timeless images. Capela de São Sebastião has beautiful tiles, the palace museum is in view and there is a fountain surrounded by Portuguese tiles.
Choose the park if: comfort, shade and easy access are priorities.

Where: Google Maps location | Easy to reach: Easy, flat paths and just off the main road. Crowded: The park is big enough to find a private location. | Tip: The shaded areas are a big advantage, especially on hot days. They’re not just more comfortable, but also give you softer, more flattering light for photos. Just keep an eye on the closing time… we once stayed a little too long during summer and nearly got locked in when the gates closed.

4. Cascais town centre
It's not without reason Cascais is so popular. The city centre is beautiful and there are many activities in summer. But with that popularity also come crowds. It's a popular day trip from Lisbon, and most tour guides that visit Sintra during the day, stop in Cascais on the way back to Lisbon.
The busiest areas are between the train station and Praia da Ribeira and the many restaurants in the old town. The early morning is ideal to propose at the Cascais beaches, and there are several of them. Especially Praia da Rainha and Praia da Ribeira de Cascais are nice, but they are small and will be crowded in summer.
Step away from the main streets, and you can discover a whole other side of town! This is where I always bring clients for their proposal photoshoots in Cascais. You'll discover colourful houses, cute streets and many blooming flowers.
Choose the town centre if: colourful streets matter more than complete privacy.

Where: Google Maps location | Easy to reach: Yes, you can take a train from Lisbon, or take an Uber/taxi. Crowded: Yes, after 9 AM in summer it gets very busy. | Tip: hire a local photographer for a Cascais photoshoot and discover the many hidden gems in town.

5. Boca do Inferno
Most people that visit Cascais will also visit Boca do Inferno. It's a 20-minute walk from town, but a beautiful route along the coast. It's a popular stop for tour guides also, so getting a private moment here is harder during the day and early evening.
Boca do Inferno translates to the "Hell's Mouth", and that is because nature is pretty wild here! With windy weather, the waves can crash violently into the cliffs and water even gets forced through the cave openings!
Great if you love dramatic scenery, but less ideal if you want privacy. But good news! There are lovely hiking paths nearby to get that rough coastline look without an audience.
Choose Boca do Inferno if: dramatic scenery matters more than having the place to yourself.

Where: Google Maps location | Easy to reach: Yes, there is a road from the city centre, and it's all flat. There are stairs to get to a lower lookout point. Crowded: Yes, especially during the day and sunset. | Tip: A sunrise proposal is ideal to avoid crowds, but there might already be some fishermen there.

6. Praia do Guincho and Praia da Cresmina
Cascais has several beaches, but there are all pretty small and busy in summer. But when you explore a little out of town, you'll discover the first "proper" beaches! Praia do Guincho and Praia da Cresmina are a 20-minute drive from town, and stretched out enough for a private moment.
It's perfect if you love nature, and there are some lovely hiking trails nearby. We did our own engagement shoot in Cascais in this area for sunset, and explored the woodlands and the beach. Perfect for a couple shoot, and my favourite area for a sunset proposal in Cascais!
Choose Guincho or Cresmina if: you want open nature and can stay flexible about wind.

Where: Google Maps location | Easy to reach: 20-minutes by car or taxi. Walking is great too, but it can take nearly 2 hours from Cascais. Crowded: In the day, there will be beach goers and surfers. The morning and sunset will be quiet enough. | Tip: It can be very windy at these beaches, and it took us three months to get the ideal weather for a photoshoot in summer! Worth the wait, but check the wind upfront on the IPMA site.

Tips for proposing in Cascais
I've helped plan proposals since moving to Lisbon in 2021, and I've helped many couples capture their love story.
- Don’t default to sunset. Everyone assumes sunset = best. But the reality is that it’s often the most crowded time. The early morning is often much quieter.
- Have a backup plan. There might be unexpected crowds, the weather changes, or maybe there are events happening.
- Wind matters more than you think. Cascais is located on the Atlantic Coast, and it’s almost always windy. That cute picnic you planned? It’s wise to check the wind forecast first!
- Avoid “main viewpoint” traps. Places like Boca do Inferno look amazing online, but you might have zero privacy.
- Don’t rely on luck for photos. Selfies won’t capture it well, and asking strangers may not work out. If capturing the moment matters to you, it’s worth planning that in advance. Whether that’s a photographer or a discreet setup.
Planning a romantic dinner in Cascais
After your marriage proposal in Cascais, you might want to stay and celebrate this milestone with a nice dinner! Here are some of our favourite restaurants to celebrate a special moment:
- Porto Santa Maria (Michelin)
- Furnas do Guincho
- Meste Ze
- Corleone Ristorante al Mare
- Maré - José Avillez (Michelin)
- KAPPO | Japanese Cuisine (Michelin)
Places nearby Cascais for a proposal
There are many nearby locations for a proposal in Portugal. Some of the most popular ones are Cabo da Roca, Praia da Ursa, the Sintra beaches and the famous palaces in Sintra.
Cascais is best for couples who want coastal scenery without the logistics of a full Sintra proposal. If you prefer palaces, dramatic mountain landscapes or Lisbon’s historic streets, another location may suit you better.
Sintra is a dreamy proposal destination and some of my most requested proposal location, but it does need some planning! Some areas get busy, and most couples prefer a more intimate setting.
Lisbon is another fantastic location for a proposal! I often photograph in Alfama with its famous viewpoints, the botanical gardens in Lisbon, and even at São Jorge Castle.
Óbidos is a bit further, but it's a popular day trip and the perfect setting for a medieval proposal in Portugal! You walk over the castle walls to admire the views, and the colourful town is a stunning backdrop for pictures.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best time to propose in Cascais Portugal?
Sunrise and early morning are usually the most private and relaxed, especially during spring and summer when popular locations get busy quickly. Sunset can also be beautiful, but tends to attract more people, so timing and location choice really matter.
How far in advance should I book my session?
I recommend booking at least a few weeks in advance, especially for peak travel seasons (spring through early autumn). If you have a specific date in mind, it’s always best to check availability as early as possible.
Can you help us choose the best location?
Of course! This is one of the most important parts of planning a proposal, and I’ll help you choose a spot that fits your style, timing, and level of privacy.
What should we wear?
Choose something you feel comfortable and confident in. Neutral tones and light fabrics work really well with Cascais’ coastal scenery. It’s also worth considering the location, as some spots are windy or involve a short walk, so practical choices can make a big difference.
Can we have flowers and champagne?
Yes, absolutely, but not in every location. Small details like flowers or a bottle of champagne can make the moment feel even more special. I can help you organise these in a way that feels natural and fits your plan.
Can the proposal be kept a surprise?
Yes, most proposals I photograph are planned as a surprise! We’ll coordinate everything in advance, including timing, location, and discreet communication on the day so it feels completely natural.
How does the photography work during the proposal?
I usually stay at a distance, so the moment feels natural and uninterrupted. Most couples don’t notice me until after the proposal, and then we can take a few relaxed photos afterwards if you’d like.
Are you planning to propose in Portugal?
Portugal has many romantic spots for a proposal, and Cascais is certainly one of them!
