Of all the proposals I photograph in Lisbon, I capture most in Alfama. And honestly, it’s not hard to see why. It’s the oldest neighbourhood in Lisbon, with narrow streets, colourful buildings, beautiful viewpoints, and some magical places to propose.

But choosing the right romantic spot and time for a proposal in Alfama makes a big difference. People often come to me wanting to propose at the Santa Luzia viewpoint at sunset, until I tell them just how busy it gets!

In this guide, you’ll discover the best places for a proposal in Alfama, when to go, and which locations are more private. And if you’re looking for someone to photograph the moment, I’ll also explain how I can help you plan and capture your Lisbon proposal without ruining the surprise.

Best places to propose in Alfama

Location Best time Crowd level Best for
Miradouro das Portas do Sol Sunrise or early morning Very busy after the early morning Wide views over Alfama and the river
Miradouro de Santa Luzia Sunrise or early morning Very busy after the early morning Tiles, flowers and Alfama views
São Jorge Castle Late afternoon or after 7 PM in summer Busy during the day, quieter later Historic walls, city views and plenty of variety
Alfama streets Throughout the day, depending on the street Low to moderate A quieter proposal among colourful streets
Miradouro de Santo Estêvão Early morning Usually quieter A smaller viewpoint with a more local feel

Miradouro das Portas do Sol

Miradouro das Portas do Sol is one of the most famous lookouts in Lisbon. You overlook the orange rooftops of the old town, with the National Pantheon, Igreja de São Vicente de Fora and the Tagus River in the background.

But with its fame come crowds, and soon after sunrise the first visitors will arrive. If you're early birds, this is one of the most beautiful places to propose in Lisbon. The light is also stunning when the sun comes up, which is perfect if you're hiring a photographer to capture the moment.

Around 8 or 8:30 AM the first tourists will arrive, and later in the day and for sunset this place is usually packed. If you prefer a private and intimate setting, I'm afraid you'll have to set the alarm!

Keep in mind: This is an open square, and therefore it is not the easiest place to hide a photographer.

Miradouro de Santa Luzia

One of the most requested surprise proposal locations in Alfama is Miradouro de Santa Luzia. The view is just as beautiful as the nearby Portas do Sol viewpoint, but here you also have colourful tiles, a pergola and plenty of flowers (from spring until autumn).

A sunrise proposal around 7 to 7.30 AM gives you the best chance of avoiding the crowds and having a quieter moment with your partner. Panoramic spots are naturally beautiful around sunset too, but by the evening you can expect street vendors, musicians and plenty of other visitors.

An honest note: This is one of Alfama’s most popular lookout points, but personally, I feel it is starting to lose some of its charm. It is still a beautiful place, but several tiles have been removed or vandalised, and one of the large bougainvillea plants came down during a storm in spring 2025. The viewpoint is changing every year, and unfortunately, not always for the better.

Lisbon Castle

If you prefer not to set a 6 AM alarm, Castelo de São Jorge is a great alternative. In the morning, visitors are already queuing when the gates open, but after 7 PM in summer, it becomes much quieter and there are several good places to propose. Many daytime visitors have left for dinner by then, while the castle remains open until 9 PM. In winter, it closes at 6 PM.

The views over Lisbon are incredible, with almost 360-degree panoramic views across the city and the Tagus River. You are also surrounded by historic stone walls, and you can climb parts of them for an even higher viewpoint.

Castelo de São Jorge is also known for its unusual residents. During your proposal, you might even be cheered on by the local peacocks, although I cannot guarantee they will appear in your photos.

Keep in mind: It can be windy and is never completely empty. Entrance tickets are required, and some paths, stairs and walls are uneven.

The cobblestone streets away from the crowds

Some of the quieter areas in Alfama are simply the cobblestone streets. Many buildings are decorated with Portuguese azulejo tiles, and you’ll find colourful doors, small stairways and plenty of character along the way. A great backdrop for photography! Some alleys also stay relatively quiet throughout the day, which gives us more flexibility with the timing.

Generally, the morning is the quietest time, especially before 9 AM. However, some sheltered streets can also work well later in the day.

Keep in mind: Alfama is a residential neighbourhood, so we always need to respect the people who live there and avoid blocking entrances. The streets are also steep, with steps and uneven pavements. If our first choice is busy with residents, traffic or visitors, we can easily move to another street nearby.

Miradouro de Santo Estêvão

Another quieter spot is Miradouro de Santa Estêvão. It's not as famous as the others, and therefore there are fewer people, even during the day. It's a smaller viewpoint with rooftop and river views and more of a residential atmosphere.

Saying that, an early morning is still great to have the area to yourself. Later in the day, you can expect locals enjoying the views and the sunset.

Keep in mind: It is still a public square used by residents and visitors. Afterwards, we can take images in the streets of Alfama, but there are many steps in this area.

How I help you with planning a surprise proposal in Alfama

I actually live in Alfama and spend time in the neighbourhood every day. That means I know my way around the maze of tiny streets, but I also know which areas tend to be busier or quieter throughout the year.

After you book or contact me, we’ll discuss what you are looking for. We’ll consider the views, expected crowds, light, mobility and how private you want the moment to feel.

Once we’ve chosen a location, I’ll share the exact meeting point and explain how to get there. If needed, I’ll also send photos or screenshots of the proposal spot. We can arrange a secret signal and decide exactly where you should stop to ask the big question.

Before the day, I’ll ask for a recent photo of you both, so I know whom to look out for. You’ll also receive my WhatsApp number, and we can share our live locations about an hour before the proposal without having to text constantly.

I always arrive a little earlier to check the chosen spot and let you know if any last-minute changes are needed.

What happens after the proposal?

After your partner says yes, I’ll introduce myself and give you a moment to celebrate. There is no need to move straight into posing while you are still taking everything in!

Once you are ready, we’ll continue with a relaxed engagement photoshoot around Alfama. Depending on your package and the proposal location, we can use nearby viewpoints, tiled buildings, colourful streets and quieter corners of the neighbourhood.

I’ll guide you when needed, but the photos will also include plenty of natural moments while you walk, talk and enjoy being newly engaged. If family or friends are part of the surprise, we can also take some group photos before continuing with the couple session.

Can we use more than one Alfama location?

There are many beautiful places in Alfama worth seeing, and where we can photograph after you got down on one knee! Many of the streets and landmarks are close enough to combine during one session. How many places we can include depends on your package, the proposal location and how much walking is involved. A longer session with your fiancée gives us more time to explore photogenic spots without rushing.

What to wear for a marriage proposal in Alfama

Foremost, please wear something you're comfortable with. You can dress as casually or as smartly as you like, but neutral colours often work especially well against colourful tiles and buildings. Cream, beige, soft blue, white and muted tones are all easy to photograph.

Comfortable shoes are most important though, as Alfama has steep streets, cobblestones and uneven pavements. I do not recommend walking through the neighbourhood in heels, but you are welcome to bring a pair for the photos. Many clients wear flats between locations and change into smarter shoes once we arrive at the proposal spot.

A light layer can also be useful, especially at the lookouts, where it may feel cooler or windier than in the sheltered streets.

Proposal extras

Flowers or a bottle of bubbles are a great way to celebrate your engagement! In public streets and panoramic Alfama proposal spots, I can usually arrange these extras as long as we keep everything simple, respect the people around us and leave the area exactly as we found it.

Ticketed monuments such as Castelo de São Jorge are different. I do not bring proposal decorations or use flowers and drinks as part of the setup inside the castle. Carrying a bouquet would also make it much harder for me to stay unnoticed before the proposal.

I can, however, keep a bottle of sparkling wine or champagne cool during the session. Once we have left the grounds, we can open it somewhere suitable and take a few more photos while you celebrate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Alfama a private place to propose?

Alfama is a public neighbourhood, so complete privacy cannot be guaranteed. However, some streets are much quieter than the famous locations. I’ll help you choose the best time and prepare a nearby backup spot in case our first choice is busy. We should also be mindful of the residents.

What is the best time for a proposal in Alfama?

The best time depends a little on the location. Sunrise or early morning is usually best for Santa Luzia and Portas do Sol, while the quieter streets can work throughout the day. Castelo de São Jorge is often a better option later in the evening, especially after 7 PM in summer. If you book a shoot, the golden light in the morning or before sunset is usually best, and I'll happily guide you with the right time for your proposal.

Which Alfama viewpoint is the quietest?

To be honest, none unless you arrive early in the morning. Miradouro de Santo Estêvão is usually a quieter option. It is smaller and has more of a residential atmosphere, although locals and visitors may still be there throughout the day.

Is an early start worth it?

Yes, especially if you want to propose at a popular spot. The viewpoints are much quieter around sunrise, and the light is usually softer. Later in the day, you can expect tour groups, street vendors, musicians and plenty of visitors.

Can family or friends join the proposal?

Yes. Family and friends can wait nearby, join you after the proposal or take part in the surprise. Please contact me before booking if your group includes more than six people, as larger groups need a little more planning.

Are Alfama’s streets suitable for limited mobility?

Some parts of Alfama may be difficult for people with limited mobility because the neighbourhood is steep and has cobblestones, uneven pavements and many stairs. Please let me know about any mobility concerns before booking so I can recommend a more suitable location and route.

Are heels suitable in Alfama?

I do not recommend walking through Alfama in heels. The streets are steep and uneven, but you can bring a pair for the photos if you like. Many clients wear comfortable shoes between locations and change once we arrive at the proposal spot.

Can we take photos at several locations?

Yes. Many of Alfama’s streets and sights are close enough to combine during one session. How many places we can include depends on your package, the proposal location and how much walking is involved.

Can we combine Alfama with São Jorge Castle?

Yes, but I recommend a longer 90-minute session because we need time to enter the castle and walk through the grounds. You will also need entrance tickets for yourself, your partner and your photographer.

Can you help me choose the exact proposal spot?

Of course! Choosing the location and timing is part of every proposal package. We’ll discuss the views, crowds, light, mobility and how private you want the moment to feel before deciding on the perfect spot.

Do you know where to propose in Alfama?

Alfama gives you plenty of choice, from famous viewpoints to quieter streets and hidden corners. The best location will depend on the time of day, the views you want and how private you would like the moment to feel.

I’ll help you choose the right spot, plan the timing, and make sure you know exactly where to go on the day. After the proposal, we can continue with a relaxed engagement photoshoot through the streets and sights nearby.
