For soft, flattering photos, the best time for a Lisbon photoshoot is shortly after sunrise and the final hour or two before sunset. The light is gentler, the temperatures are cooler, and the streets are usually quieter, especially in the morning. If you want those beautiful Lisbon backdrops without the crowds, setting an early alarm is definitely worth it.
As a Lisbon-based photographer, I’ve seen how dramatically the time of day can change the look and feel of a session. Harsh midday sun creates stronger contrast, unflattering shadows, and plenty of squinting, while cloudy days offer softer light for longer. The season also matters, particularly during Lisbon’s hot summer months.
Whether you’re planning family photos, a couple’s session, a surprise proposal, or photographing the city yourself, this guide will help you choose the best time for a Lisbon photoshoot. I’ll cover sunrise, sunset, weather, seasonal differences, and a few specific tips for families and proposals.
Why timing matters for your photos
The light is better
Light is the secret sauce in photography. It shapes mood, colour, and atmosphere. In Lisbon, where the sun can be intense, good light makes all the difference.
When you photograph earlier in the morning and in the hours before the sun sets, there is less contrast. The sun is closer to the horizon, and with less brightness, it will create flattering light instead of harsh conditions. It’s known as the golden hour, also sometimes referred to as the magic hour.
- Morning golden hour (the first hour after sunrise): cool, soft light with a calm and peaceful atmosphere. Perfect for quiet moments and fresh-looking portraits
- Evening golden hour (the last hour before sunset): warm, golden tones create a romantic and dreamy atmosphere. Ideal for couples and sunset backdrops.
Over the years, I’ve photographed hundreds of travellers across the city. The most common feedback I get? “I’m so glad we did it early!” or “Golden hour was just magical!” And it really is.
The city is still quiet
Another reason is that the streets in the morning are simply empty. People are having breakfast, and tourists start to flock to the famous sights after 9 AM. If you want your images without people, this is the time! It’s also the ideal time for surprise proposals! Even the most famous highlights are still quiet.
During sunset, it’s also quieter, but not everywhere. The Lisbon viewpoints are a favourite place to see the sun go down, and some sights remain open until late in summer. But as many people are now having dinner, it’s a great time to venture out with your camera and capture the city!
Want empty streets in your photos? Early morning sessions are my top tip, especially for surprise proposals or solo travellers who want space to shine.
Your kids still have energy!
Do your kids get annoyed after a day of sightseeing? Or does your little one need a nap in the afternoon? After working with families and kids for years, I’ve noticed that mornings are often the best. Children are still excited about what the day has to offer, and have the energy to walk around.
Your energy levels and travel plans
Are you jet-lagged? Travelling with kids? Planning to party the night before? These are all factors to consider when selecting your session time.
The temperatures are cooler
In winter, it’s never too hot to venture out, but especially in July and August, the temperatures are regularly over 30 °C (86 °F). When you’re being photographed, it’s nicer not to be all sweaty. Lisbon is also a very hilly city, and walking uphill can be a struggle when the temperatures are too high.
Tips on the best areas for morning photography in Lisbon
Set your alarm and watch the city come alive! Some of my favourite areas to shoot in the morning include:
- Alfama – Pure magic, with the first light peeking over the rooftops. Plus, there are no people at Miradouro de Santa Luzia, which is perfect for a proposal! Alfama is also nice later in the day, but you can expect more people.
- Baixa – Stunning views and not many people. You might even be alone near the Bica and Santa Justa Elevator! Also fun before sunset, but busier.
- Graça viewpoint – Golden light and wide views without crowds.
Best golden hour in Lisbon photography spots you don’t want to miss
When the temperatures cool down, it’s time to explore Lisbon even more! These key locations come to life in the evening light:
- MAAT Museum in Belém – Ideal for architecture lovers, and it’s a great spot for portraits too!
- Miradouro da Senhora do Monte – Best views for sunset, but you will not be alone.
- São Jorge Castle - Lisbon Castle offers some of the best views during sunset, and after 7 PM it's even ideal for a proposal.
- Tagus River waterfront – Ideal for couples and sunset silhouettes. The sunset is also nice from the south bank of the river in Almada.
- The Lisbon parks – Most parks and botanical gardens are never super busy, and they are one of my favourite places for portraits and proposals.
- Cacilhas - Take the ferry from Cais de Sodré to Cacilhas and enjoy the sunset!
Not sure whether morning or evening suits you best? I’ll help you decide based on your style and your Lisbon plans.
The light throughout the seasons
The light in Lisbon shifts with the seasons, and that means the best photo timing does too. In summer, you can expect long days and warm evenings. Spring and autumn have softer light, while winter offers a cooler tone and much earlier golden hour, which is ideal for travellers with evening plans.
Here’s when golden hour typically falls throughout the year:
- Summer: around 7:30–9:00 PM
- Spring/Autumn: around 6:00–7:00 PM
- Winter: as early as 4:30–5:30 PM
- Sunrise shifts too, from about 6 AM in summer to around 7:30 AM in winter, which affects morning sessions. I always check the light for your exact date and guide you to the best time depending on your session type and the look you want to achieve.
Midday photos: when it works (and when it doesn’t)
The harsh truth about harsh light is that the midday sun in Lisbon can be very bright and unflattering. The bright sunlight creates strong shadows and squinting eyes. It’s also the hottest time of day, which is not ideal in the summer.
I tend to avoid shooting at these hours, as they’re not ideal for portraits, but they can be fun for a creative shoot!
That said, there are exceptions when the midday light can work:
- In winter, the midday light is less harsh and very usable
- On overcast days
- Shady alleys in parts of Alfama and Bairro Alto can still work
- Tight schedules: if this is your only option, I’ll try to adjust accordingly
- Photography workshops: harsh sunlight is perfect for challenges and contrast pictures
Blue hour and evening shoots
Twilight, also known as blue hour, happens just before sunrise and just after sunset. The light is dimmer and cooler, which creates deep blue tones. It makes a moody, almost cinematic feel, perfect for those who love dramatic skies, silhouettes, or a more atmospheric look. Just keep in mind it’s a short window (20-30 minutes) and the lower light requires a steady hand or a tripod.
In winter, I love photographing people against the backdrop of Christmas lights! So even when it’s dark, we can enjoy a session!
Do you visit Lisbon during Christmas? I would love to show you the best decorations and capture you with the vibrant Christmas lights!
Unique Lisbon locations after dark
Lisbon is also full of magic after dark. If you’re up for an evening shoot, you can explore some of the beautifully lit spots! Miradouro da Graça offers stunning twilight views, especially with São Jorge Castle in the distance.
Many of Lisbon’s iconic monuments, such as the Castle of São Jorge, the Belém Tower, and the Lisbon Cathedral, are beautifully illuminated. Neighbourhoods such as Alfama have a cinematic feel once the crowds have faded. Evening sessions have a whole new layer of atmosphere! The early nights are also perfect for night photography, although a tripod will be needed.
During the winter months, I offer nighttime photography workshops! Book a session and learn how to capture Lisbon at night.
What to do when it rains?
The weather in Lisbon is usually sunny, but it does experience occasional rainfall. You can expect most rain in Lisbon between October and April, but thankfully, it rarely rains for the entire day. The biggest downside is that the roads can be very slippery! But a photo session in the rain can also be a lot of fun and creative!
Wear a raincoat, bring an umbrella and ensure your camera gear stays dry. You can use a puddle for natural reflections, which makes the historical buildings even more unique! I’ve also taken fun portraits where people jump in the puddles for creative effects.
Did you book a session with me? With heavy rain, we can adjust our plans and reschedule our photo walk. If we cannot reschedule the date, your session will be fully refunded if it has already been paid for.
What photography services do you offer?
I offer two main types of photography experiences in Lisbon: private photo sessions and photography workshops. Both are designed to be personal, relaxed, and tailored to your travel plans, but they serve different goals.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is sunrise really worth waking up early for in Lisbon?
Yes, it’s absolutely worth it. The light is flattering, the streets are quiet, and you’ll often have the city pretty much to yourself, especially in popular spots, such as Alfama or Baixa. It’s one of the best times for relaxed, crowd-free photos.
What’s the best time for family photos in Lisbon?
The morning is usually best for families, especially with young children. The light is soft, the temperature is cooler, and little ones tend to be fresher and more relaxed earlier in the day. It’s also quieter in the city, which makes the session smoother and more fun for everyone.
Can I book a Lisbon photography session during midday?
Yes, you can, but it depends on the season and location. Midday light is quite harsh, especially in summer, so I usually recommend early morning or golden hour instead. That said, in winter or shaded areas like Alfama, a midday session can still work well. I’ll help you choose the best spots if midday is your only option.
How far in advance should I book my photo session?
I recommend booking at least 4-6 weeks in advance, especially if you want a sunrise or golden hour slot. Lisbon can get busy, particularly in spring and summer, and popular times fill up quickly. Last-minute sessions are sometimes possible, but booking early gives you the best choice of time and location. Some clients reserve a spot months in advance.

Do you want to take great pictures during your trip, or are you interested in a photo session? Then, the light can play a significant role in its success. Getting up early is definitely worth it if you prefer empty streets, while the sunset at the end of the day will give you that golden glow!
As a local photographer, I understand the importance of light, and I get excited when it’s the perfect setting for a photoshoot.
