Are you wondering if a Belém Tower proposal is right for you? After photographing proposals at the Lisbon tower for several years, I can definitely recommend it. It’s a beautiful location, but there are a few things worth knowing before you plan the moment.

One of the best things about a proposal at Belém Tower is that you don't have to enter to have a stunning location. The tower in the background is perfect for photos, and some of my favourite proposal spots are actually outside the landmark itself. But you can, of course, get down on one knee inside the tower too if you prefer.

The famous tower also attracts crowds, so there is a bit of planning involved if you want the moment to feel more private. Some areas are better than others, the light is very different at sunrise and sunset, and during the day it can get quite crowded.

With these tips, you should have a good idea of what it's like to propose at Belém Tower, when and where to do it, and how to make the most of the location. And if you're looking to capture the moment without spoiling the surprise, you know where to find me.

Is the Belém Tower a good place to propose?

The Belém Tower is an instantly recognisable Lisbon backdrop, and one I absolutely love for a proposal. But it’s not only the tower that is beautiful. The Tejo River right next to it is also stunning, with wide views over the water and, in the distance, the famous Ponte 25 de Abril. So that means two Lisbon landmarks in one spot!

Another thing I like about this location is that the area around the tower is flat, so there are no hills to climb. The surface around the tower is also accessible for wheelchairs and prams, if needed.

There is plenty of space around the tower too. When the tide is low, a small beach appears in front of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The tower is also right next to a park, which is a lovely area for photographs afterwards.

I’ll tell you about some of my favourite photo locations a bit later, but Belém offers a lot of variety for a photoshoot. Usually, after the proposal at Torre de Belém, we continue with a short engagement session at some of the other beautiful spots nearby. It’s super easy to combine the proposal with a walk through Belém.

There are some downsides to proposing at the Lisbon tower too. Belém Tower gets very busy during the day, especially when it is open to visitors. It is currently open Tuesday to Sunday from 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM and closed on Mondays.

Another downside is that it can be very windy near the river. In summer, that can be a lovely refreshing breeze, but during the winter months it can feel quite chilly.

What is the best time for a Belém Tower proposal?

And that leads to the next question: when should you plan a Torre de Belém proposal? My two favourite times are sunrise and sunset, and both have some pros and cons.

Sunrise is perfect for early risers, but if you try to get your partner out of bed for no good reason, this might be a bit suspicious! On the plus side, this is the quietest time of day. Sunrise is usually around 7:30 AM, and while most people are still asleep, you can start the day with a little magic. The soft morning light is also perfect for photographs.

You can propose in the middle of the day, but you might get a round of applause when people notice! Belém is pretty busy in any season, as there is so much to see and do in the area. So you can expect crowds, and for photography, the bright midday sun is usually not ideal as the light can be quite harsh.

Sunset is when things start to get quieter again. I usually meet my couples around 1.5 hours before the sun goes down, and by this point, many of the day trippers have left or are having dinner. In summer, this is usually around 7:00 to 7:30 PM, while in winter, it can be around 4:00 PM. There will be some people though, and usually a bit busier than the early morning.

Between October and April or May, Lisbon can be a little cloudier, but for photographs that is not necessarily a bad thing. Even during the middle of the day, clouds can create soft, even and beautiful light.

Overall, the golden hour in the morning and evening are my favourite times for a Belém Tower proposal. You get the prettiest light, fewer crowds and a much calmer atmosphere for the moment.

Where exactly should you propose at Belém Tower?

One of the questions I hear the most is: “Do you need to enter Belém Tower to propose?” And the answer is: not necessarily. You can, of course, propose inside if you like, but from a photography perspective, I think it’s much nicer to have the tower in the frame while you pop the question.

I have three favourite locations around the tower.

The first is on the west side of the landmark. This area is especially beautiful at sunset, as the light falls on the tower without shining directly into my camera. You get the full tower in the frame, and there is a small green area with a kind of platform that is usually not too busy. I can comfortably sit behind a tree and blend in with the other tourists, while still being able to see you arriving from a distance.

Another lovely spot is the path leading up to the tower. As you can imagine, most visitors walk along this path, so even at sunrise or sunset, some people may pass by during the proposal. The view is beautiful though, with the tower directly behind you, but it does feel a little more exposed.

The most exposed location is right in front of the monument. There is nothing really hiding you here, so people from all angles may be able to see the proposal. It is a lovely spot at sunrise, when the area is quieter, but it may be less ideal if you are hoping for a more intimate moment.

For most couples, I recommend the west side at sunset because it gives you a clear view of the tower while allowing me to stay discreet.

Whichever angle you choose, you will most likely have some river views as well. During the engagement session afterwards, I always make sure to include this area too, so you get a mix of the tower, the river and the surroundings.

What happens during a surprise proposal photoshoot at Belém Tower?

I love planning proposals in Lisbon, and I will gladly help you make this moment super special! Once you've booked, I will ask you to text me on WhatsApp so we can enable location sharing on the day. One mistake I wouldn't make is repeatedly checking your phone as you approach the tower. That's why I use location sharing instead of messaging you every five minutes.

I will also ask you to share a recent photo of the two of you, so I know who to look out for when you arrive.

Generally speaking, this is how it works:

  • We agree on the exact location and time beforehand.
  • I position myself discreetly nearby.
  • You arrive naturally at the agreed spot.
  • You pop the question.
  • I capture the proposal and your partner's reaction.
  • Afterwards, we continue with an engagement photoshoot around Belém.

Where can we take photos after the proposal?

Once the nerves have settled, you’ve asked your partner, got the big YES and maybe brushed away a happy tear, there is always time for some lovely pictures nearby. And thankfully, you don’t have to walk far for beautiful backdrops!

If you book a 30-minute session, we can spend some time in the Jardim da Torre de Belém. It’s a lovely garden, and from many areas we can still see the tower in the background. We can also make our way closer to the river and take some pictures there.

Most couples book a 60-minute session, which gives us enough time to extend the shoot towards the Jerónimos Monastery. We can walk along the river, briefly stop at the Monument to the Discoveries, and take some pictures in the park in front of the monastery. Time permitting, we can finish the session at Pastéis de Belém and celebrate your engagement with a pastel de nata!

Can’t get enough? I also love the MAAT Museum for photoshoots. It’s a little further away, so a 90-minute session works best, but it’s so worth it. You can walk up onto the roof, which is perfect for sunset views just before it gets dark, and the building itself creates plenty of unique angles for portraits.

With MAAT included, you get a lovely mix of old and new architecture, river views and some of Belém’s most famous sights.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I naturally get my partner to the exact proposal spot?

We can plan this together beforehand, so the walk to the proposal location feels completely natural. I can suggest an easy route, a believable reason for stopping in a particular place and the best way to approach the spot without making your partner suspicious.

What excuse can I use if I want to propose early in the morning?

This is often the trickiest part of a sunrise or early-morning proposal if you're not normally up this early. A breakfast reservation, an early sightseeing plan or simply wanting to see Belém before the crowds arrive can all work well. I am also happy to help you come up with a cover story that fits your itinerary and your partner.

How far in advance should I book a Belém Tower proposal photographer?

The earlier, the better, especially if you have a specific date or time in mind. Popular dates and weekends can book up in advance, but it is always worth getting in touch even if your proposal is coming up soon.

What happens if we are running late?

Do not panic. If you realise you are going to be late, send me a message as soon as possible so I know what is happening. A small delay is usually manageable, although longer delays may affect the available photography time or the light conditions we originally planned for.

Will my partner notice the photographer?

The aim is that they do not. We agree on the exact location and plan beforehand, and I position myself far enough away to photograph the proposal discreetly. I will not approach you or make contact until after the proposal has happened.

What should I do just before I get down on one knee?

Try not to rush the moment. Stop at the agreed spot, make sure you are both facing roughly the right direction and take a second to connect with your partner before proposing. I will give you clear instructions beforehand about where to stand and which direction works best for the photographs.

What if people walk between us during the proposal?

Belém is a public space, so occasionally someone may walk through the background or between you and the camera. I choose the position carefully and keep an eye on what is happening around you, but it is impossible to control every passer-by. If you want fewer people around, an early-morning proposal is usually the safest option.

What should we wear for a Belém Tower proposal?

Wear something that feels like you, but keep the location in mind. Belém involves some walking and parts of the area have uneven surfaces, so comfortable footwear is useful. You can absolutely dress up for the occasion, but I would avoid anything that makes your partner suspicious if that is not how you normally dress for sightseeing.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Lisbon weather can change quickly, so a poor forecast does not always mean the proposal needs to be cancelled. Depending on the conditions, we may be able to adjust the timing slightly or work with light rain. If the weather looks particularly bad, we can discuss the options beforehand and decide on the most practical plan.

Is the Belém Tower the right proposal spot for you?

Belém Tower is a great choice if you want an iconic Lisbon backdrop, views over the Tagus and plenty of options for photos afterwards. It works especially well if you love the idea of proposing somewhere that feels recognisably Lisbon, without being right in the middle of the old town.

I would love to be your Belém Tower proposal photographer, but if you're still not sure whether Belém is the right location for you, I have plenty more tips to help you choose. In my guide to the best places to propose in Lisbon, I compare Belém with Alfama, Lisbon's viewpoints and other romantic proposal locations around the city.
